Through coincidence and her own efforts, Nabou manages to emigrate from Senegal to Finland, but she has to leave behind her mother and her daughter Arame. In Finland, Nabou divorces her Finnish husband, has a child, becomes bogged down in the bureaucratic jungle, and works odd jobs in order to send all of her hard-earned income to her mother and daughter back home in Dakar. When the process of uniting Arame with her family in Finland finally shows progress, Nabou travels to Senegal in order to bring her daughter back with her. When she arrives in Senegal, Nabou finds out what has happened to the money she sent her mother.
