Episode 1: Bird’s-Eye View

The festival’s artistic directors Anna-Kaisa Rastenberger and Sanni Seppo discuss the theme of the festival. Why is this year’s festival title Bird’s-Eye View?

Episode 2: birdsong 

Musician and professor of folk music Heikki Laitinen discusses the meaning of birdsong with postdoctoral researcher and project coordinator Heidi Björklund. The discussion is hosted by the festival’s artistic director Sanni Seppo. The conversation trio meet on Helsinki’s Talinhuippu hill to hear the dawn chorus of birds in the early hours of the morning.

Episode 3: The Fate of Our Bird Species

Conservation secretary Juho Leppänen from the Ornithological Society of Helsinki Region and Extinction Rebellion Finland activist Tiina Jalonen discuss how Finnish species are becoming threatened and how we could take action to protect them. The conversation is hosted by festival producer Kerttu Matinpuro. Many thanks to Voima for allowing us to visit their recording studio!

Public talk about nature photography

The discussion was in Finnish.

Why is nature viewed through the camera? Is the photograph of nature true? Does it show the true essence of nature? What is a true nature or true nature experience? What do photographs of nature do to our relationship with nature?

These topics were discussed at the Finnish Museum of Photography at the PVF's exhibition Bird's-Eye View on Wednesday, 1 December 2021, at 6pm. Thank you to everyone who joined us and the Finnish Museum of Photography for collaboration!

Speakers: photographers Antti Haataja, Ritva Kovalainen and Juha Suonpää and the artistic director of the Festival of Political Photography, Anna-Kaisa Rastenberger.
